Here it comes: winter skin. Cold air and home heating dries everything out -meaning that many of us will experience dry, cracking or flaky skin over the next few months. If this sounds like you, it’s a sign that it could be time to switch up your skincare routine. For healthy, hydrated and moisturized skin, try these 5 winter skincare tips:
1. Drink more water
Staying hydrated internally reflects externally in the health of your skin – proper hydration aids in digestion, circulation, and rids the body of toxins which can lead to a healthy glow. Aim to drink an adequate amount of water per day and avoid excessive alcohol or caffeine, which are known to dehydrate.
2. Use a humidifier
Increasing moisture levels in your environment will replenish dehydrated skin and hair. Humidifiers are also good for the sinuses by clearing up nasal congestion.
3. Take a steam shower
Because hot water strips the skin of its moisture, it’s best to avoid hot showers especially in the winter months. Instead try a steam shower, which is more soothing, has many health benefits and allows for easier absorption of moisturizing products. Plus, steam showers provide an excellent place to rest, relax, and revitalize after a long or stressful day.
4. Gently cleanse and exfoliate
Use a gentle cleanser or cleansing balm rather than a gel or foaming cleanser with harsher ingredients, which should be saved for the summer months. While it might seem counterintuitive, don’t forget to also lightly exfoliate periodically to prevent dead skin build up, which can clog the pores and actually prevent your skin from absorbing moisture.
5. Switch from lotions to creams
Swap lightweight lotions for heavier creams or balms – the thicker texture is better at sealing moisture and healing dry, cracked or flaking skin. On the face, try incorporating a hyaluronic serum under your top layer of facial cream for additional moisture.
