5 Steps to Choosing the Right Steam Shower for Your Home

September 6, 2019 | Inspiration, Tips & How-To

Steam rooms have been around for decades. A steam room is created when a water-filled generator pumps steam into an enclosed space so there is moisture in the air when people are sitting in it. The temperature inside a steam room is generally between 110°F and 114°F with a humidity level of 100 percent. Modern steam rooms are often found in gyms or spas — but scores of people are adding them into their homes so they can relax and relieve stress in the privacy of their own space.

If you’re ready to take the at-home steam plunge but don’t know where to start, this blog post is for you. Here are some simple steps you’ll want to follow when choosing a steam shower.

1. Consider Your Enclosure

Thanks to modern day steam generator technology, steam is not hard to introduce into an existing shower enclosure — but it must be enclosed, insulated and sealed. (You don’t want your steam to escape, do you?) If you have a conventional shower door, you’re in luck — you can keep it, however, you must add a fixed panel at the top so that the normal opening above the door is completely sealed. Most shower door companies can make a top panel for a reasonable cost.

2. Consider Your Surfaces

You’ll also want to make sure that your shower walls and ceiling are tiled or surfaced with a waterproof material such as stone or a manmade sheet product. Most shower enclosures use one or more of these materials: tile, natural stone, acrylic, fiberglass, or composites. Each material has different heat retention properties, and this will be a factor in the generator you choose.

3. Calculate the Size You Need

There are different generators for different size showers. High ceilings or particularly large spaces will require a larger steam room generator, for instance. 5. Don’t Forget the Lights!

Another important thing to consider when designing your steam shower is ventilation. You don’t want any other heating, venting or air-conditioning components inside your steam shower space. And make sure your light fixtures are vapor-sealed. ThermaSol has a stylish line of steam shower accessories to match the trim you choose.
