5 Tips for Cleaning Your Steam Shower

May 15, 2024 | Tips & How-To

Maintaining a clean and sanitized shower is essential for optimal performance, longevity and a healthy shower experience. A steam shower offers numerous health and wellness benefits, but it is important to always uphold a pristine space to guarantee its long-term efficiency. While a standard shower should be washed weekly, a steam shower requires more frequent cleaning. It’s also important to use cleaning products that are safe for the specific materials in your shower.

If you have a steam shower or are considering installing one in your home, here are five tips on how to ensure proper care and maintenance.

1. Use the Right Cleaning Products

Choosing safe disinfecting products compatible with the material in your steam shower is crucial. Whether it’s porcelain tile, natural stone, glass or any other surface, opt for products that are gentle and won’t cause damage. Avoid harsh chemicals that could harm the surface. This will ensure both cleanliness and longevity for your steam shower.

2. Wash Thoroughly

Ensuring a sanitary steam shower is essential to preventing the growth of mold and mildew. Begin by rinsing the shower area with warm water, eliminating any excess dirt or residue. Next, use a safe cleansing product to thoroughly sanitize the doors, windows, floors and fixtures. Use a scrubber in a circular motion to effectively remove grime and maintain the shower’s freshness and luxurious feel. Lastly, rinse away all excess soap and ensure proper ventilation is being used to effectively dry the space.

3. Maintain the Steam Generator

To ensure optimal performance and longevity of a steam shower, it is important to properly maintain the steam generator. One effective method for sanitizing a ThermaSol Steam Generator is utilizing ThermaSol’s Powerflush technology. This innovative cleaning solution offers a comprehensive approach to removing calcification build-up from the generator’s inner tank. Powerflush technology removes sediment with greater efficiency and precision, maintaining the steam generator’s performance.

Note: It’s important to hire a plumber or authorized service technician to do a manual descaling of the generator unit every few years to ensure any deposits have been thoroughly removed to keep your steam generator working as optimally as possible.

4. Remove Hardware if Necessary

For a deep wash, it’s essential to periodically remove hardware in the shower area. Take out steam shower accessories and fixtures like the steamhead, rainhead or any other handles, if applicable. Submerge these fixtures into a safe cleaning solution and allow them to soak to eliminate any accumulated debris. Once they are clean, reattach these fixtures and enjoy your fresh shower.

5. Clean out the Drain

Cleaning a drain is important for both standard and steam showers. Start by boiling a generous amount of hot water and pouring it down the drain. Next, create a mixture by combining one cup of vinegar with one cup of baking soda, then pour it down the drain. Let this mixture sit for several minutes to break down any buildup. This process effectively clears blockages and minimizes the growth of mildew and debris, ensuring your shower drains water properly and stays hygienic.
