A residential steam shower is the ultimate luxury fixture for relaxation and restoration. They are a great and effective way to wind down after a long day or a tough workout. A steam shower system or sauna room has also been known to aid in clearing congestion and improving circulation.

If you’re considering installing a personal steam shower in your home, there are a few tips you should know related to care and maintenance. Here are 10 tips you need to know when cleaning your in-home steam shower.

Cleaning A Standard Shower vs. A Steam Shower

Overall, steam showers are more eco-friendly and highly efficient. They operate on a steam generator that quickly evaporates water to create the hallmark humidity of a steam shower.

Products used for cleaning an in-home steam shower are the same that you would use on a standard shower. However, your cleaning routine will have to be more frequent due to the added humidity.

Step-By-Step Residential Steam Shower Cleaning Instructions

This process will be targeted to address the top two primary concerns of cleaning steam showers: keeping things clean and shiny and eliminating hard water stains.

#1 Choose The Right Product

Use a liquid antibacterial product for home steam showers made of glass or tile. Be sure to choose a product that is safe for that material. Spray the cleaner from at least six inches away from the surface and let it soak for approximately five minutes.

#2 Pick Your Scrubber

A sponge or brush will work best. Scrub in a circular motion with big, overlapping strokes.

#3 Remove Hardware If Necessary

If a deeper clean is required, remove steam shower accessories and fixtures such as the shower head, handles, and nozzles. Submerge these fixtures in the same cleaning solution and let them soak while you scrub.

#4 Clean Walls, Seats, and Floor

Leave no area unsprayed or unscrubbed! It all gets wet and needs a good thorough cleaning to stay clean. If you habitually skip an area, you’ll be able to tell that it looks less clean over time. Regular scrubbing of the entire shower is the best way to keep your steam shower looking and feeling like the luxurious indulgence it was designed to be.

#5 Rinse Thoroughly

Attach a hose to the bathroom sink or use your mopping bucket filled with fresh water to rinse off all the suds. Rinse the fixtures in a bucket of fresh water or run under the tap.

#6 Circulate Air

Leave the window open while cleaning to circulate fresh air and dry out the room. If there is no window, leave the exhaust fan on or set up a stand-alone fan and leave the door open.

#7 Clearing Up Hard Water and Mineral Stains

For any stubborn water or mineral stains, use a mix of dish soap and vinegar. Spray and soak as before and use a brush to scrub it away.

#8 Grout Cleaning Tips

Grouted areas are the most difficult places to clean in home steam showers. If you don’t have one, purchase a v-shaped grout scrubber for best results.

Create a mix of two-parts baking soda and one part hydrogen peroxide. Rub this mix into the grout and let it soak for up to 10 minutes. After vigorous scrubbing, wipe the area clean with a rag.

If that doesn’t do the trick, you can also purchase a special grout cleaner like Grout-Eez. Keep in mind that these cleaners are usually not safe for natural materials like slate and marble. Always check the label before using it.

#9 In-Home Steam Shower 3-Step Drain Cleaning

Every few months, you might want to make sure your drain is moving things along efficiently. Here is the 3-step process to clean a drain: First,  boil a generous amount of hot water and pour it down the drain. Second, mix one cup of vinegar and one cup of baking soda and send it after the water. Let this mixture sit for several minutes. Follow the baking soda mix with one final pot of boiling water.

#10 Clean Thoroughly and Clean Often

A regular shower may not need the same level of attentive care but it also doesn’t provide the comfort and wellness benefits of a personal steam shower. Keep your unit clean and fresh so you can continue to enjoy softer skin, detoxification, and less overall stiffness.
